I received a sms yesterday-- or rather, this morning at 1.10am.
The friend said:
A close fren n colleague of my sis jus died 2day suddenly due 2 heart attack. my sis was so sad juz now, kept crying. im gonna treasure u my fren =) tk great care...
The friend must have realised how fragile life is and sent the sms to everyone that she knows. Reminds me of our local team Singapore's dragon-boaters incident. The five guys reminded the nation of the impermanence of life, that we really have treasure the ones we care about.
I guess the shock is enhanced when it happens to people close to you.
The sms really touched my heart, because we hadn't really got the chance to talk during this semester. Secondly, although it is good to know that she now realise nothing stays the same forever, it still hurts a bit to know that she has to learn it in such a way.
Death makes one grow up. One is forced to move a step forward on the road to maturity, albeit unwillingly and unvoluntarily.
My mum was watching the news about the dragon-boaters the other day. When I walked into the room she turned and said, "It pains to see someone so lively to-- go, just like that."
She look at me, "Don't do anything dangerous ok? You are the only son I have!"
I said, "Look at them, mum-- they're so experienced and all, but they still... when it's time to go, it's time to go."
My mum said, "Dunwann laaaa..."
But she didn't make me promise. She must have agreed, deep in her heart, how powerless we are in taking charge of our own lives.
One of life's many unexpected twists. Unexpected because we often yearns for constancy and security.
There are things that we lost on the journey of life. The important thing is to learn from them. There are things that we gain on the journey of life. The important thing is to learn to let go when the time comes.
The important thing is to treasure "now". Because we all know that nothing last, don't we?
My condolences to the families and friends of the 5 dragon-boaters, here on my own little blog admist the cyber space. My condolences to my friend's sister's colleague, too.

玲: I faced deaths in short span b4, too. it's hard. my point is one has to accept whatever comes one's way, i mean ppl die from fallin down on the pavement, and walking is so dangerous...

ahkai: me too. everything is fine for me though, just that the sms sets off an emotional trigger abt life and death and frens and everything else =))
I rmbed facing the deaths of my paternal grandpa and maternal grandma in just a few mths time. but i din know what to feel at that time.
but now that i have grown up, just looking at my loved ones lying on a hospital bed hurts me. Growing up is really so hard.
but hey i agree with ur mom, dun go do anythg dangerous ya? u r the only 'you' that everyone has! :)
Enjoy urself after exams. in a grown-up way nvtheless. :)
